The Department of French Italian and Spanish is committed to excellent teaching, based on sound pedagogical approaches appropriate for the learning of language, culture and literature. It promotes innovation and takes every opportunity to enhance the student’s learning experience. This attitude is reflected in the adoption and development of new teaching technologies, the promotion of international agreements, the hiring of language assistants, and collaborations with other University of Calgary units such as the French Centre, the Aula Cervantes, the Language Research Centre, the Department of Linguistics and the Faculty of Education.
The Department maintains small classes for its senior and advanced courses, and promotes learner-centered approaches and research. Various opportunities exist to extend learning beyond the classroom. The Department actively promotes student involvement and enhanced learning opportunities through the language centres (Centre français, Centro de Tertulia, Il Circolino), blended-learning courses, Repsit the online French resource, travel-study courses, and international study experiences.
